Have you been looking for a small animal-oriented club that doesn’t require a lot of commitment throughout the semester? The Equestrian Club, run by Associate Professor Lee Crocker of the
Professional Studies Department, meets all those criteria.
Many may hesitate to join this club because they know nothing about horses, assume it’ll be insanely expensive, or are simply anxious about the unfamiliar experience. All those reasons are perfectly valid. However, there are plenty of ways not to let those reasons keep you from joining the club this semester or next.
Equestrian Club only formally meets about 2-3 times a semester, and all of the meetings are very flexible if you have a class or another commitment. Being a part of this club requires absolutely no prior experience, either. When asked to give a quote on joining the club with little to no horse experience, student Alfred Otton said, “Be curious, not judgmental.” In addition to not requiring any equine experience, Equestrian Club works with the Financial Aid office to provide monetary assistance for people who would like to take riding lessons while here at Landmark College.
In addition to all the practical advantages to this club, this club also provides a lot of opportunities that are both fun and educational. Equestrian Club holds off-campus excursions throughout each semester that are full of both learning and excitement. As an example of a trip being taken by the club, the members are headed to the University of Vermont (UVM) Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vermont on April 11th. The UVM Morgan Horse Farm’s mission is to “preserve and promote the Morgan breed, and to provide hands-on educational experiences to students and the public.”
Unfortunately, most of Equestrian Club’s current members are graduating and/or transferring after this semester, so if you are looking to help keep a unique club afloat that comes with animal time, financial assistance, and fun trips, joining Equestrian Club isn’t a terrible idea. If interested in joining, reach out to Lee Crocker or the club’s officers Charlotte Graham and Kodiak Ormiston. Any of them can help get you involved with this opportunity!
