Satoshi Tajiri is the video game designer and director of Pokémon and President of Game Freak. Tajiri was born on August 28, 1965, in
Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan. As a child, he was diagnosed with Autism. He grew up in the rural area of Machida, Tokyo. There he would partake in his favorite hobby, bug collecting. This hobby would become the inspiration for Pokémon. As a Teenager he became a fan of video games, he enjoyed games like Space Invader. His love of arcade games got him into a spot of trouble often skipping school, he often had to make up classes. After high school he did not attend college or university, however, he attended a two-year degree program at the National Institute of Technology, at Tokyo College.
From 1981 to 1986 Tajiri created and worked on a fan magazine or fanzine called Game Freak. Game Freak at the time centered on arcade games and other things involving strategy and easter eggs. The most popular copy is Xevious, selling over 10,000 copies. In 1989 the Game Freak fanzine would be turned into a game company. On February 27, 1996, Pokémon Red and Green would be released in Japan. The game while in production almost bankrupted Game Freak and took 6 years to produce. The game was a major success selling millions of copies of both Red and Green. Pokémon would grow to become one of the largest-grossing media with multiple games and a new game coming in 2025.
