Florence Welch is an English songwriter and singer. She was born on August 28, 1986, in London, England. She was born to Nick Russell Welch and Evelyn Welch. As a child, her grandmother Cybil Welch encouraged her to pursue singing. She attended Thomas’s London Day School and later Alleyn’s School, where she would do well academically. However, she would also get in trouble singing in school, despite this she found solace in singing and music. Welch had an early love of literature, even though she was diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. After secondary school, she would attend Camberwell College of Arts, where she would study illustration. Before eventually dropping out to focus on music.
Florence would be part of a band called Florence and the Machine. She created the band with her friend Isabella Summers. On July 6, 2009, the band would gain attention. In 2007 the band would release the debut album Lungs. By August the album had sold over 100,000 copies. In 2010 she would provide vocals for David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s album Here Lies Love. Other albums she’s released include Dance Fever, Sweet Nothing, Under Heaven Over Hell, Ceremonial, and High as Hope to name a few albums. Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, and Patti Smith are some of her influences.
During her music career, she would receive 25 wins and 115 nominations from various awards. She won 2 Brit awards, 1 MTV Video Music award, 3 NME awards, 3 Q awards, 2 UK festival awards, 4 UK music video awards, and 10 other awards. She had also received 7 nominations at the Grammies. Welch is also an advocate for women’s rights and LGBT rights, and during concerts, she waved around a rainbow flag during one of her songs.
