As queer people, it can be hard to know if you will be in danger when you enter a new space. You may not know other people’s stance on LGBT rights, or the reaction they will give when you come out to them. This can be a very unsure and scary process as we want to protect ourselves from potential harm, whether it be physical, mental, or emotional. The Stonewall Center will be holding a discussion on safety for queer individuals. Participants will discuss where it is safe to be open about sexual orientation and gender, and where it is not safe to be open about those aspects of your identity. They will also review how to properly ‘mask’ or conceal and suppress your identity in an unsafe environment. Advice will be given on how to find proper resources that protect both yourself and other people. This discussion will be held in the coffee house located in the basement of Stone Hall on October 24. Doors open at 8:00 PM, and the event will end at 10:00 PM.
