On Thursday, September 5th, 2024, Stonewall held an event in the Stone Hall Coffeehouse called Find Your Flag. The first thing I noticed when I went into the room was how many people there were, all in collective unison to join the event. People filled up the room, from the couches to chairs, it looked to be around 20-30 people who attended. On the door, they had a sign-in sheet which asked questions such as name/pronoun, dorm you live in, the day, program, and what the viewer would like to see. It looked like everyone knew each other well. As I waited in excitement, I saw the waving rainbow flags on the screen. Although it was his first event, it was very informative as he discussed different pride flags in history, starting with the Gilbert Baker flag. Then he explored the 7 Gilbert Baker flag and the current flag called the “Standard Pride” flag which did not change until 2017. Next, he talked about the Philadelphia Pride flag and the Progress Pride flag. The progress flag is copyrighted for creative use such as personal use or small businesses. The license for this flag was so capitalist that businesses did not take advantage of it during pride month to make money. He also went over the Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag. Finally, a new speaker changed the discussion to the Lesbian flag, she was very informative about what the flag meant. Another speaker went over the Trans Flag and then it wheeled to another speaker for the Non-Binary Flag along with the Ace Flag. The next flag presented was the Pansexual Flag. After, the Bisexual Flag was presented. Each flag had its own unique history relating to the creator and how the flag was created along with what each color meant as each color/stripe on the flag had deep importance. Throughout the session, there were questions, people were engaged, and other informed audience members spread their wisdom as it felt very laid back with a sense of camaraderie. Overall, I quite enjoyed the event, as I saw it from a bird’s eye view. After the presentation, they showed a video of the meaning of global flags which was used as comedic relief while the event activity was creating our own flags.
